Swimming round it we picked up the floating oars, and lashing them across the gunwale, tumbled back to our places. There we sat up to our knees in the sea, the water covering every rib and plank, so that to our downward gazing eyes the suspended craft seemed.<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"grid__item five-twelfths portable--auto lap--auto palm--auto top-no-padding bottom-medium-padding center \">\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"s1 type_second\" style=\"color: #a8a8a8;\">Meanwhile the driving scud, rack, and mist, grew darker with the shadows of night; no sign of the ship could be seen. The rising sea forbade all attempts to bale out the boat. The oars were useless as propellers, performing now the office of life-preservers the real life from the wild one.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"grid__item eight-twelfths portable--auto lap--auto palm--auto top-no-padding bottom-no-padding center \">\n<figure id=\"attachment_3885\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3885\" style=\"width: 1432px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><noscript><img class=\"wp-image-3885 size-full lazyload ll\" src=\"http:\/\/dorotheeswinke.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/blog-01.jpg\"><\/noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3885 size-full lazyload ll\" alt=\"\" width=\"1432\" height=\"955\" data-src=\"http:\/\/dorotheeswinke.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/blog-01.jpg\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3885\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wet, drenched through, and shivering cold, despairing of ship or boat, we lifted up our eyes as the dawn came on.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"grid__item two-twelfths portable--auto lap--auto palm--auto top-no-padding bottom-no-padding \"><\/div>\n<div class=\"grid__item four-twelfths portable--auto lap--auto palm--auto top-no-padding bottom-no-padding \">\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #bdbdbd;\">There are certain queer times and occasions in this strange mixed affair we call life when a man takes this whole universe for a vast practical joke, though the wit thereof he but dimly discerns, and more than suspects that the joke is at nobody&rsquo;s expense but his own. However, nothing dispirits, and nothing seems worth while disputing. He bolts down all events, all creeds, and beliefs, and persuasions, all hard things visible and invisible, never mind how knobby; as an ostrich of potent digestion gobbles down bullets and gun flints. I knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life surfing the best spots in the world, living easy and minimal.
